Demonstrating Respect

Respect is not so much talked about as it is modelled.
After an initial explanation of what the word means, we talk about how this may apply in their lives. We start by talking about what it looks like on the soccer field... Listening to the Teacher Mentor as they explain the rules of the game and what is expected of them. The basic principles of listening with eyes and ears, sitting or standing still while the conversation continues, not interrupting or speaking over who ever is talking etc. The Teacher Mentor will then model this throughout the program as the players approach them with questions or has something to say in group discussion. Modeling the behavior of listening to a child in the areas we operate can sometimes be the first experience of this for the some children. We then talk about making sure players are alright if they are tripped or kicked in a game, something that happens in a physical game, so we want to make sure fellow players know it was an accident and that we care enough to make sure they are not harmed. The other point we make a big deal of during this teaching is the Golden Rule, doing to others as you would have done to you, is not just a nice slogan but rather an action in life that should be at the center of our living a successful life.
Once we have discussed and practiced this on the field we then work to get the children to understand what this looks like at home, in school, and their neighborhood. It is very important that our group discussion is transferring all that is being learned into their life outside the Pure Game program.
Knowing the children we serve are surrounded by criminal and gang activity, domestic violence and sexual abuse, mental and emotional abuse, and many other negative role models, it is important they understand they have the ability to make positive choices regardless of these circumstance.
