Creating a safe environment on the Pure Game field can be very refreshing for many of the kids who particpate in the program. We demonstrate that even with a physical sport, safety can be thought about and practiced. Many great conversations are had when we talk about safety on the soccer field, not kicking a player, not kicking the ball wildly, and listening to and following instructions are just some of the topics. But, when we get to the topic of safety at home, school, and in their neighborhood is when things really start to heat up. We talk about not playing with knives, not runing at home, not giving personal details online, listening to the teacher, not hanging out with gang members, and making sure you get home before dark are just some of the interesting topics the children talk about. What we find interesting is the amount of detail the children go into. They all know what it should look like, but getting them to understand how they have the ability to choose a safe option is something different. That is what we strive to do on the soccer field with many teachable moments within the game.
