In this Transformation Tuesday special, Field Champion Danielle shares an Encouragement Ball Story:
“I recently ran one of Pure Game’s introductory programs at Boys & Girls Club Garden Grove and had the opportunity to work with a great group of kids in 1st-5th grade. Over 3 short weeks, I was able to engage with them through soccer while teaching the importance of respect, cooperation, compassion, optimism and teamwork.
One particular student showed a great interest in the program; he was always excited to see me and loved to play soccer. He was quick to learn and immediately applied the lessons of respect and teamwork on the field.
On the last day of the program, he came up to me before the start and told me he has been battling heart cancer since he was little. My heart melted instantly in empathy for the struggle this young 4th grader faced. I was also was captivated by his pure joy for life and the strong willpower he carries with him every day.
On this last day, I introduced optimism to the kids and talked about the importance of never giving up and staying hopeful and positive.
During the soccer game, he scored his first goal and everyone on field celebrated! I had an Encouragement Ball with me in my bag, not knowing that I would have the opportunity to give it to someone who was facing such adversity.
Before the end of the program, I presented this unique Encouragement Ball to him and told him that whenever he feels afraid or sad to look at this ball and know that there are so many people who care about him and that he should never give up.
I am very lucky to be able to see firsthand how our Encouragement Balls positively impact the youth. Kids like him need this positive support in their lives and they truly deserve it!”
