Once a week, Pure Game visits Juvenile Hall to provide its character, leadership and mentoring programs. These teens have made poor choices in the past and are at a pivotal crossroad to either make better choices or to continue on the path that got them in trouble. Understanding the challenges these teens face, Pure Game is passionate about providing positive influences and experiences to encourage and support them.
Recently, Pure Game was able to take four of the teens on a private tour of the LA Galaxy’s home stadium, the StubHub Center. “We wanted to provide a unique experience for these teens… something they would not be exposed to in their regular day to day lives… something that would inspire them and help them see the importance of education and hard work.” Tony Everett, Founder & Chief Playmaker, Pure Game
The tour started in the lobby where Zach Wells, former goalkeeper for the MetroStars, Houston Dynamo and DC United, greeted the kids and began the exclusive behind the scenes tour. The tour proceeded under the stadium where the teens were able to see the player’s lounge, media room, laundry room, the locker room locations and the underground garage.
Upon exiting the exclusive behind the scenes areas, the teens were able to walk up to the edge of the playing field
and then walk over to the practice field where some of the LA Galaxy players were practicing. During the practice on the teens said, “I have been to a few Chivas games, but I have never been behind the scenes so its good to see how everything works and everyone contributes to the game.”
Throughout the tour, Pure Game staff and Board members were able to talk with the teens. When one of the teens was asked how Pure Game’s programs have impacted his life, he said “Its played a pretty good impact on keeping me positive in everyday life and my work ethic has really improved since I started this program. “
On the last stop of the tour, the teens were able to talk to some of the LA Galaxy staff that held positions in management, sales, graphic design and coaching. The staff introduced themselves, explained their role with the LA Galaxy and talked about how they acquired their position. One employee shared about the difficulties he faced growing up but that he went to school, worked hard and was able to be successful. The teens were eager to listen and ask questions.
Allison Carey, a classroom teacher who was there to chaperone the teens, stated, “This experience is going to give them hope, it will encourage them to continue their education and it will encourage them to continue to communicate positively. ”
Providing experiences like this tour help reinforce the lessons that Pure Game teaches. As a result of this
tour, the teens were able to see that people care about them and that there are opportunities for a brighter future if they make better choices and work hard to accomplish their goals.
“The teens are really impressionable. I didn’t understand how important it is for these teens to be encouraged until interacting with them on this tour. Most of the teens don’t have people in their lives to tell them they can accomplish their dreams. Pure Game is playing an important role in building their self-esteem, confidence and perspectives on life.” Jeanette Valencia, Board Member, Pure Game
The tour was a great success and would not have been possible without the support of the LA Galaxy. If you would like to support or learn more about Pure Game’s Juvenile Hall program, please contact Chris Panaia at [email protected].
