Andy has a passion for fixing bikes; he loves to tinker and could spend all day making things work. Unfortunately Andy struggles with his grades, and because of this he sees no purpose for education in his life. Being called to the Principals office for poor behavior and grades creates a cycle of negativity in Andy that has him believe school is not for him.
There is substantial evidence that physical activity can help improve academic achievement, including grades and standardized test scores. Further, such activity can affect cognitive skills, attitudes and academic behavior, including enhanced concentration, attention, and improved classroom behavior (GAO, 2012).
Thankfully, Andy engaged with us at his school and through the encouraging environment we provide he started to see his potential. We were able to talk with Andy about having a future in bike repair/store ownership. This led to a conversation about skills he would need for such a future. Skills like the in and out of money, or math. This simple conversation enabled Andy to see the relevance of math in his life. Andy is now applying himself at school and his Math grade has moved from an F to a C. This is what Andy had to say about the Pure Game program, “People want to see others successful, and that pushes me to want to do more”.
Our primary objectives are to provide physical activity, help youth avoid negative influences, build self-respect, and realize their potential. We achieve this though our In-School partnerships.
Pure Game In-School programs, like the one Andy is enjoying, produces our greatest results. With just 20-
30 minutes of physical activity infused with our STAR SOCCER Character Education Curriculum, we are
able to influence behavior and create a positive transition from breaks back to study.
Donate today so Andy can realize his dream of working on bikes as his career. Your donation of $25 will provide an additional 8-week program for Andy. $50 will provide an 8-week program for Andy and a friend. $150 will allow Pure Game to offer Andy a full year of programing.
